Game Cards: The Alphabet

Students love playing games in their free time, be it video, mobile or tabletop games, but numerous studies have also shown the importance and positive impact games can have on learning. Incorporating games in your classroom can help your learners develop a positive relationship with the language and English lessons. While working with games, the teacher’s role changes from an instructor to a guide. This helps you to reduce teacher talking time and make the students the centre of the lesson.

Try this game with your students using our Alphabet Game Cards!

Scattergories (All levels):

• You can play this game with your students individually or in pairs.
• Shuffle the cards and hold the deck. You should only use one set of “letter” cards; they can be upper- or lower-case.
• Draw a card and show it to students. Once everyone knows what letter they’ll be working with, give them one minute to write as many words as possible that begin with the letter in the card.
• When the time is up, ask students to tell you some of the words they wrote; you can write them on the board to ensure students have spelt them correctly.
• Students get 1 point for every word they get. After a few rounds, the player with the most points wins.
• To make the activity more challenging, you can give students some categories so they write one example of each instead of random words. Some popular categories are Names, Animals, Food or Drinks, Places, Objects, Brands, etc.
