Communicative Language Activities: Problems & Solutions

This Communicative Language activity contains a set of images. Here are some ideas on how to use these handy resources!

GIVING ADVICE

• Print as many sets of the images as you will have pairs or groups for the activity.
• Cut the photos up and give a set to each group or pair.
• Go over the vocabulary if necessary.
• Have students work in pairs or groups. The take turns to pull an image and tell their partner(s) what problem they have, e.g., ’I spilled water on my laptop’.
• The other student(s) give advice for the problem, e.g., ’you should quickly switch it off, dry it and go to a service shop if it seems broken’.

AND THEN!

• Print as many sets of the images as you have pairs or groups for the activity.
• Cut the photos up and give a set to each group or pair.
• Go over the vocabulary if necessary.
• Have students work in pairs or groups. They take turns to pull an image and tell their partner(s) what actions led up to the event in the image, e.g., ‘I played outside for a long time. It was sunny and I didn’t have a hat. And then, I got a headache’.
• Encourage students to ask follow-up questions so the speaker continues the story. You can turn it into a competition by awarding points to the student who keeps their story up for the longest time.
