Conditionals Chain Drill

Age: Teenagers / Adults

Level: Intermediate - Upper Intermediate

Target Structure: Mixed Tenses & Vocabulary;

Duration: 10-20 minutes (depending on group size)

Materials: Conditionals Grammar Cards

  • This activity can be adapted to the specific conditional you want to practise. See chart below for reference.
  • Print out as many copies of the conditionals sheet and the one with the structure you want to practice.
  • In this case, cards are more of a reference for students, so they remember what auxiliaries or forms of the verb they need to create their sentences.
  • You can do this as a whole class or in small groups, depending on group size.
  • Tell the students a “condition”, so they have to come up with a “result” that matches.

Teacher: “win the lottery”

Student A: If I win the lottery, I’ll quit my job.

  • Then, next student has to take the result from the previous one and use as a condition, to come up with their own result. Next student does the same, and so on.

Student B: If I quit my job, I can wake up late every day

Student C: If I wake up late every day, I may gain weight…

  • Immediate correction may be advised in order to create correct patterns:

Student: If I win the lottery, I will buys a house.

Teacher: Buys or buy?

Student: If I win the lottery, I will buy a house.
