Use this fun worksheet to get your students talking about their plans and hopes for the new year.

New year, new me! Do you want to get students talking when they return to the class in the new year? Use this handy worksheet.

How to play

Elementary to Intermediate

  • Print enough Elementary worksheets for all students.
  • Hand the worksheets out to students.
  • Ask them to look at the prompts and write the questions in the second column.
  • Tell students to add their own questions in the empty boxes at the end. They can do this individually or in pairs.
  • Go over the questions as a class. Only check that students got the grammatical form of the questions right.
  • Explain the rules: students will go and ask each other questions. If they get a positive answer, they should put their classmate’s name next to the question and ask a follow-up question, for example, ‘Do you know which gym you want to join?’. They should also write down the details.
  • Ask students to mingle, ask each other the questions, and take notes.
  • When they are finished, put students in groups of four and tell them to discuss what they learned about their classmates’ plans and hopes for the new year. If your group is small, discuss the findings as a class.
  • Do delayed feedback sessions for any errors you picked up when your students were doing the activities.

  • Print enough Upper-Intermediate worksheets for all students.
  • Hand the worksheets to students. Explain they will have to use the prompts in the first column to form questions they’ll ask each other.
